The paper, Online Remembrance of the Beirut Port Explosion: Justice, State Failure, and Digital Memory on X and Reddit, analyzed Lebanon-centered records published between August 2024 and May 2026.

Its main finding was clear:

42.2% focused on unresolved justice and impunity.
29.5% focused on state failure, corruption and institutional collapse.
Together, these frames accounted for 71.7% of the analyzed records.
Personal grief accounted for 11.8%.

What the Study Examined

The study did not reinvestigate the explosion or measure Lebanese public opinion.

It examined how the disaster continued to appear in public online discourse through:

Arabic- and English-language posts on X
Posts and comments from the r/Lebanon subreddit

The goal was to identify the main frames used when people discussed or remembered the explosion years after it occurred.

Main Results

The final analytical corpus included 7,191 records.

The six identified memory frames were:

Unresolved justice and impunity: 42.2%
State failure, corruption and collapse: 29.5%
Anniversary remembrance: 12.0%
Personal grief, trauma and loss: 11.8%
Loss of future and emigration: 3.2%
Memory fatigue and forgetting: 1.2%

The same broad pattern appeared across platforms and languages.

Justice and state failure together accounted for approximately:

72% of X records
70% of Reddit records
73% of Arabic-language X posts
69% of English-language X posts

This consistency suggests that the central finding was not driven by one platform or language group.

Why the Finding Matters

More than five years after the explosion, no individual had been convicted in connection with the disaster.

The study suggests that this absence of institutional closure shapes how the event is remembered online. Public discussion repeatedly returns to responsibility, obstruction, corruption and the demand for justice.

Digital remembrance therefore functions not only as commemoration, but also as a continuing form of public accountability.

Method and Limitations

The study used a structured classification system to assign posts and comments to six memory frames.

Classification was assisted by a large language model and checked through manual review. Records that could not be clearly classified were excluded from the main analysis.

The findings describe public online discourse, not the views of the Lebanese population as a whole. Private posts, deleted content and material not captured through platform searches were not included.
